Carol Barrington - DestinationPh, Otago Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand: Juvenile Yellow-eyed Penguin looking for parents. Considered to be the worlds rarest penguin, 19 pairs of Yellow-eyed Penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) thrive in a breeding colony at Harrington Point on the southern shore of the Otago peninsula near Dunedin. Adults are identified by the yellow iris in their eyes and yellow headband; those pictured without those yellow markings are juveniles. They nest in the offshore dunes, the adults venturing into the sea for food which they bring back to the chicks. Image taken at Penguin Place, a Yellow-eyed Penguin Conservation Reserve and winner of many eco-tourism awards. |
